open clothes

By Venty Indah Utami

Yesterday, when I had a gathering with some of my friends, we discussed over an issue which brought us to such a great debate.

About men, women, and rape.
They pinpointed the woman in a sexy clothes as the reason of why a rape is occured.
And guess what?
I am getting really angry because of that.

Call me a feminist.
But yes, I would be very glad to be led into such a discussion with those who called women in the open clothes as an excuse to rape someone.

Like, hello? Are we living in a cave or something?
Do women in the open clothes made them inhumane or something?

First, let me tell you. The one that shall be eradicated is not the woman.
It is the rapist.
The women in open clothes are not the only one who got raped, actually. Those who are in the very close clothes, innocent passerby who wears the neat uniform, those who are in their hijab, are ALSO vulnerable to rape.
Is it because of what they are wearing?
No.

It is because the rapist.

It is very unfortunate that we live in a very patriarchy environment, with women as the one to blame whenever mistakes are happened.
Why women always being blamed when it is her who got raped?
"No wonder she got raped. She wears mini skirts."
Why not men who got blamed for having a dirty thought?
"No wonder she got raped. She got home very late at nite."
Hey, don't you ever thought perhaps it is not even her wish to be home very late? Perhaps it's their job. Perhaps they have a very urgent business.
It is not even close to an excuse to rape someone.

I absolutely despise those people who even take seconds or minutes from their valued time to give such a jerk comment.
And I could not even want to let them imagine if "the woman who got raped" is their friend, family, or their beloved ones.
Would they still say the same?
Would they still give such a hurtful comment?

Think.
And think again.

YES. DON'T RAPE. Instead of DON'T GET RAPED.

Think.
